Handa City: An Introduction

Handa City is located about 35 km south-east of Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture in the central part of Japan. Located near the base of the Chita Peninsula, also faces the Kinuura Bay to the south, Agui-cho to the north, and the city of Tokoname to the south. There are three scenic locations worth visiting in Handa City: The Science Museum of the Sky, the Nankichi Memorial Museum, and the Land of Vinegar.

The Science Museum of the Sky

This was built next to the city library in 1948 to help people learn more science for pleasure. It has three parts, each with a different theme. The first floor is about the universe, the second floor is about the globe we live on, and the third floor is about the sky, sun, and moon. We can touch these models for free, and listen some stories from experts. Also it has a 18 meter planetarium on the first floor with 270 seats. In the center is a stage-piano. Performances are held there at 10 a.m. on every each Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Of course planetarium program change on every each season, and sometimes musical concerts are held here. This is really a popular a date-spot in Handa.

Nankichi Memorial Museum

Nankichi Niimi, who was a famous fairy tale writer, was born in 1913 at Yanabe-cho in Handa City. He died when he was only 29 years old during the World War II. The eightieth anniversary of his birthday was recently celebrated, and his museum was built at Yanabe-cho in 1993. It has source books with some his photographs, so we get lots of information about him (his face, works, lifestyle, biography) . If you visit in late September, you can see cluster-amaryllises, which was Nankichi's favorite flower.

The Country of Vinegar

In 1811 the Mitsukan Vinegar Corporation and Factory were founded at Hon-machi, and now it has become most popular vinegar maker in Japan. To show its gratitude Handa City, the Mitsukan Factory opened a display to the public to help people know about the vinegar. Its factory is so big that about three hours are needed to see all areas.

Conclusion

Handa City is about an hour from Nagoya by Meitetsu or JR train. From Handa Meitetsu Station, the sightseeing buses leave to and from the Nankichi Memorial Museum four times a day. To commememrate his 80th birthday, this museum was opened in 1993 less than two kilometers northwest of Handa Station. It has many original texts and photographs of Nankichi Niimi and information about his life. If you visit here in late September, you can see cluster-amaryllises, Nankichi's favorite flower.
