EAST MEETS WEST: PRACTICAL ENGLISH 3
Unit 1: Listening Tip

1. Start With Purpose

Before you start listening to something, consider what your purpose is.
What do you hope to gain?
Will you be listening for specific information or just general idea?
If you take a few moments to think what you're listening for
_before_ you start to listen,
you'll find listening easier.

Listening is actually an active process.
You have the power to filter out lots of information,
and also make connections between diverse things a speaker says.
By knowing what you want to learn in advance before a person speakers,
you can better "take control" of the listening process.

Application

Look at Listening Exercise 2. The instructions asks you to listen for four things:
the name of each person interviewed, the languages they speak, how well they speak,
and attitudes or habits that prevent them from learning a foreign language well.
In a sense, that is the formal purpose of the listening task.

What about your personal purpose?
Do you see anything in this listening exercise you might want to learn?
Can you identify some personally meaningful purpose for this activity?
